Highlights of Mrityunjay Cartoonist Show at ICCR Gallery, Ravindra Bharathi

As the saying goes “a picture speaks volumes”, in the same spirit, the cartoon exhibition organised last week at Ravindra Bharathi spoke volumes about the feelings of four crore Telangana people on their only dream of achieving statehood. The exhibition showcasing the cartoons of prominent cartoonist Mr. Mrityunjay was in fact a commendable effort to capture 60 years of a dream through 60 cartoons. In what was also the first cultural event organised by Telangana government shows its commitment level at the very first step in bringing talent to light, which otherwise would have gone unrecognised.

Love for art matched with a heart that breathed for Telangana drove several people to the exhibition. The exhibition was open for all for five days, from 9th June 2014 to 13th June 2014 between 4:30 PM to 9:00 PM.

The chief guests for the event were:
1) Sri Jagadesh Reddy Garu – Education Minister of Telangana State
2) Dr. K.V. Ramana Garu – IPS, Advisor for Telangana Government – Cultural, Tourism and Endowments
3) Sri Allam Narayana Garu – Editor – Namasthe Telangana Daily
4) Dr. Rallabanda Kavitha Prasad Garu – Sanchalakulu, Cultural Department
5) Sri Katta Shekhar Reddy Garu – CEO Namasthe Telangana Daily

Several eminent personalities who also paid a visit to the show were seen cherishing the actual events that lay behind each of the cartoons. Among the visitors were Cartoonist Mohan, Artist Laxman Aelay (the one who designed Telangana Logo), Mr. Kondandaram, JAC chairman, Mr. Goreti Venkanna, popular Telangana folk singer (he was presented with a painting of himself by Mr. Mrityunjay), Mr. Aekka Yada Giri Rao, sculptor of Telangana Martyrs Statue, Mr. N Mukthewara Rao, IAS, Mr. Vinay Bhaskar, MLA – Warangal West constituency, Mr. Dileep Konatham from Mission Telangana news portal, Shrimati Archana Sonti, a well known Fine Arts personality, journalist Shrimati Rama Saraswate, editor of Sunday Magazine Bathukamma Mr. Kandukuri Ramesh Babu Writer and Signer Mr. Mittapalli Surender along with Actor Nandu, Mr. Shankar, Cartoonist, one of the top ten beauticians and yoga trainers of Hyderabad Sangeetha, Kandikonda and many Osmania University Students.

Cartoons on display encapsulated several facts in a witty and humours manner. Rani Rudrama Devi depicted in a warrior like posture holding a sword but mounted directly on raised platform instead of a horse showed the inadequate funds sanctioned by the previous governments for celebrating Kakatiya Festivals. A new born baby being forced to change her natural cry (Kyar Kyar) to rhyme with a united Andhra Pradesh slogan (Samai “Kyar” Samai “Kyar”) is related to the humiliation faced by a pregnant woman from Telangana at a hospital in Kurnool, Rayalaseema. A cartoon highlighting Telangana Martyrs statue and showing Telangana martyrs celebrating the new state formation from a parallel universe reflects the immense respect Telangana community has for Telangana Martyrs. Another cartoon enlightening Telangana students not to commit suicides. A visibly happy Bharat Mata holding her healthy and cheerful new born baby named “Telangana State”. Telangana Thalli showering flowers on KCR Sir who in turn showers them on Telangana Martyrs Statue.

The 60 cartoons on display were selectively handpicked by Mrityunjay from the vast repertoire of his cartoons sketched in a long career. In what could be a measure for the minimal dimensions in any news daily, the talent of a cartoonist lies in exploiting that little space provided to him at the bottom left side corner of a daily. The cartoon never escapes the eyes and mind of readers and no reader ever skips to the internal pages without out glancing at that spot. The spot is patented by dailies for cartoonists in order to provide some humour out of the trending developments to readers and Mr. Mrityunjay is currently carrying such a responsibility successfully under the supervision of Mr. Allam Narayana, editor of Namasthe Telangana daily.

In nearly a decade of our stay in Hyderabad for the first time ever we (my friend and I who visited this show) experienced a new feeling as we walked around the place, a feeling that “this is ours”. We are not passionate art lovers but not philistine either, however, Ravindra Bharati never crossed our minds as the destination for art and cultural events. The initiative of Telangana Government in organising Mrityunjay’s cartoonscape has surely made several commoners like us in deciding to regularly visit the place in future in search for Telangana memoirs in the form of “our Art and our Culture”.
