Hyderabad the capital of Telangana, is the city of lakes and most all of them have been artificially created and have some history associated to them. One of the most beautiful places in and around Hyderabad is the Himayat Sagar Lake. It is situated about 20 kms from the city of Hyderabad and is parallel to its twin lake, Osman Sagar; the latter being larger of the two.
In 1908, Musi River, which divides the old city and new city of Hyderabad, suffered major floods. Thus, the Himayat Sagar Lake was built in 1927 and was engineered by Late Khaja Mohinuddin. It also became a source of drinking water for Hyderabad and Secunderabad. It has been named after Himayat Ali Khan, the son of the Last Nizam of Hyderabad, Nizam VII, during whose reign the lake was built.

The basic purpose of the construction of Himayat Sagar Lake is to store water. Hyderabad, or in general the Deccan region receives seasonal rainfall. This happens only once a year, during the monsoon extending from June till September. Thus, the Himayat Sagar Lake’s primary purpose is to store this water to fulfill the water requirement for the rest of the year. The lake is also responsible for the recharged ground water levels of Hyderabad and the area around it.
This place makes for a beautiful picnic spot; you may see birds flying over, the deep blue sky and feel the refreshing breeze. If you visit the place at night, you would be mesmerized by the lake’s beauty. On visiting, you will realize how popular it is amongst the locals as well; from couples to little kiddies with their parents, from collegiate to middle-aged people, all come here to hearten up their lives. One needs a break from the routine urban life, and many Hyderbadis flock here for the much needed break, on weekends and made this one of tourist places to visit in Hyderabad and Telangana. Tourists also have made it a favoured lake spot.
The drive to Himayat Sagar Lake is itself very endearing. It is suggested that you take a private conveyance from Hyderabad to the Lake. It takes about 50 minutes by road, and these 50 minutes won’t seem long at all! Once you reach Langar House, you will see a board directing to the left as “Sarvatra Park.” take the left and drive straight in the direction of Chilkur. Keep driving till you get to the Kalimaata temple and here the road forks. Take the left road and you will reach the famous lake.
