Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar Lakes – Hyderabad Tourism
Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar lakes are constructed by the last Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan in the year 1927. These two lakes are constructed to overcome floods of Musi River of Hyderabad.
Osman Sagar Lake is situated 20 kms west of the city. In 1908, floods wrecked Hyderabad. To prevent from further flooding and to serve as a water source, the Nizam ordered for the damming of the Musi River. And Osman Sagar Lake was born. The lake is spread over an area of 46 square kilometers and the reservoir covers an area of 29 square kilometers. The most recent measurement recorded to be 1769.8 feet deep.
Thus, the Himayat Sagar Lake was built in 1927 and was engineered by Late Khaja Mohinuddin. It also became a source of drinking water for Hyderabad and Secunderabad. It has been named after Himayat Ali Khan, the son of the Last Nizam of Hyderabad, Nizam VII, during whose reign the lake was built.
Now the two lakes are become tourist destinations of Hyderabad.
