
Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad is one of the biggest mosques in the world. The foundation of Mecca Masjid is laid in the year 1614 by Quli Qutub Shah. The construction of this second biggest mosque of India got finished in the year 1694 when Mughul Emperor Aurangzeb was ruling the Golconda Kingdom. (Biggest Mosque of India is Jama Masjid of Delhi constructed in the year 1656 by Shahjahan).
Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad is now listed as a heritage building. The mosque is constucted using the bricks made from soil brought from Mecca. These bricks were in the construction of Central Arch of the Mosque. The foundation stone was laid by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah and more than 8000 workers were employed in the construction the Mosque.
Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad has a beautiful architecture. The length of the main hall is 67 metres, width is 50 metres, height is 23 metres and can accomodate more than 10000 worshipers.
Inscriptions from the Holy Quran are present on the arches and doors. There are total of 15 beatiful arches with 5 each on the three sides of the Mosque supporting the roof. The arches give close look of Qutub Shahi architecture. The entrance courtyard of the Mosque contains the tombs of the Nizams and their family.
