Preserving water is the foremost concern of every king and ruler of the world. It depends on decision makers to decide what kind of structure is suitable for them and their people in available terrain.
The rulers of Hyderabad built several engineering structures across their dominion that stand and speak about the legacy they left. One of the unique among them is Mir Alam Tank, that supplied water for its citizens for around 125 years before much bigger Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs were built.
A 6 kms away from the main railway station of Hyderabad and adjacent to popular Nehru Zoological Park, the Mir Alam Tank has a mile long bund with semi-circular shaped 21 in-built small masonry dams that make the visitors speechless. It has countless local tales speaking high about the sweetness of water and people carrying in containers before they embark on long journeys.
According to the plaque available at the site, the tank was named after the founder Mir Alam, the then prime minister of Mir Akbar Ali Khan Sikander Jah Asif Jah III, the third Nizam of Hyderabad, and was completed in two years (25 July 1804 -8 June 1806).
The primary inflow and outflow of the Mir Alam tank is linked to Musi (Muchukunda) river, on which city of Hyderabad was built.
Currently being operated by State tourism department after restoring the old beauty, visitors can experience the wonderful view of the lake by driving in the waters using steering, speed and mechanized boats.
