Besides the palaces, forts, museums and temples, Hyderabad also has scenic beauty to offer. In and around Hyderabad, there are some beautiful lakes. To ensure that the water needs of the people of Hyderabad and neighboring towns were fulfilled, the Nizams of Hyderabad dammed the Musi River and constructed these artificial lakes. The lakes also became home to the migratory birds flowing across, in the winter making them the best places to visit in Hyderabad. One of these is the Shamirpet Lake in Hyderabad. It now has a small dam with some flood gates.

Located 24 kilometers north of Hyderabad, this man made lake built by Nizam falls in the Rangareddy district. Since the spot is away from the city, one can come and enjoy some solitary moments here. This tourist spot of Hyderabad is set in a beautiful rocky terrain and is much famous for its glorious sunsets and forms a perfect tourist spot in Hyderabad.

If you’re a writer or poet, seeking isolation from the monotonous and routine schedule of the city, head to the Shamirpet. The calm at the lake may clear your tensions too and make for a good pending-decision making time.

During winter, migratory birds set home at the lake. The setting sun, an expanse of water, rocky terrain and birds in flight; This lake is definitely a photographer’s delight and a perfect scenic spot of Hyderabad.

The Jawahar Deer Park, located half a kilometer from the lake is home to different species of deer, peacocks and some beautiful birds. There are flowering plants, clearly defined paths and information on the birds that can be spotted is available. The Shamirpet Lake Hyderabad is amongst the favourites for picnicking as the cool environment and shady groves are perfect for a warm morning.

There’s also a small temple dedicated to local deity-Katta Maisama, at the beginning of the dam. ‘Katta’ means bridge. The deity is believed to provide protection to travelers passing using the bridge. Small idols of Hanuman and other gods dot the rocks surrounding the lake. A small stream flowing over a bed of rocks adds to the beauty of this lake. Several Telugu films have been filmed around the rocky terrain against the peaceful backdrop of the lake.

Fishing business is carried out in the Shamirpet Lake too. Some cases of drowning were reported in the past, hence the Shamirpet Police takes care now and warning boards have been placed around. Two of the country’s most prestigious educational institutes- Birla Institute of Technology(BITS) and Nalsar University of Law are situated near the lake. Sometimes, patients from Mediciti hospital are brought here to let them enjoy the fresh environment too.

The Hyderabad Tourism board has tried to develop the lake and the area around as a good tourist spot. Celebrity Club, Alankrita Resort and a resort opened by the state tourism cater to the people interested in retreating from the bustling city for their vacation. Guest cottages have also come up, close by. Most picnickers carry their own food though.

On weekdays and holidays, the usually secluded Shamirpet Lake transforms into a typical Hyderabad tourist destination. If you’re looking for some quiet time alone to engage in a few conversations with yourself, or for a personal family picnic, drive away to the Shamirpet and enjoy this Hyderabad weekend gateway tourist spot.
